Sonja Mellaerts is a textile artist with a passion for felt.
Growing up around her mother's sewing studio resulted in a fashion education. Later on she combines her job in the fashion industry with a textile design course in Tilburg.
Art also has always fascinated Sonja. She has been painting for several years at the Hageland Academy of Fine Arts.
At the beginning of 2017, after a period of illness, she closes her fashion chapter and will focus on
sustainable design in felt.
Local shepherds become suppliers of wool, nature becomes a supplier of inspiration and dyes.
She is guided by the wool and other rich materials, intuitively works with color combinations and composition.
That makes the felt paintings intriguing to look at, comfortable by the texture and inviting to the touch.
All designs are unique, the raw, organic of the wool comes back in many works,
but there is also contemporary modern artwork.
Everything is felted in the traditional way, sometimes combined with the modern knowledge of textile design.
Felt is warm, sound absorbing ( acoustic ) and brings a pleasant atmosphere to any interior .
